Country Bunnies Custom Quilting Longarm Quilting

Spring is not my favourite season.  I know, I know, it's when things bloom and come alive... but it's also muddy, unpredictable and seemingly endless... My kids are too old for a conventional Easter, but over the years I have been particularly evil with my hiding spots... my favourite is probably when I buried the prize 2 feet underground in a chicken graveyard, hahaha.

I thought I would share this adorable quilt which was made by Monette in Kamloops, B.C.   You can find the links to the two videos I posted this morning below.

I'm not positive but I think these are Kaffe Fassett fabrics.  Which are quite busy.  It can be hard to quilt these fabrics because the thread line can get so lost.  So I decided to try and stick with designs I knew really well, where I was less likely to get confused.

Monette loves feathers so I incorporated as many as I could. In the border, I used a Bumpy Feather and Piano Keys.  Having the piano keys going off the feather gives me the ability to free form the feathers without having to pay too much attention to the edge of the quilt, I do have to come back and bump the piano key up to the feather... so not sure if I am saving time or not.

With the busy fabrics that frame the bunny blocks, I chose to have one free-motion quilting design (the spine half feather) and a ruler-based design (blunt piano key).  Both of these designs complement the outside borders.

Monette used Fireside backing which shows off the quilting, here is a photo of these inside border designs.

I quilted the bunny blocks using feathers, scalloped flowers, and McTavishing.  If you watch the YouTube videos you will see how I was originally going to do pebbles (my favourite goto) but once I had quilted a good chunk of the background I realized that the pebbles blended too much with the flower design. I switched to McTavishing.  I'm not sure if it was the best choice, looking back I think a small-scale stipple might have worked better...  Maybe not, we will never know unless I get another one!

I finished off the quilting by adding a swirl on the cotton tail and some feathers on the ears.
