Grid Quilting Block 1

Grid Quilting Block 1

It's time to kick off a new summer series! This year, I'm going to explore some gridwork designs. Some of the designs I have used before, and some of them are going to be a little experimental, but nothing too wild. I started by making myself a super simple canvas. I cut 12.5" squares and added some 1.5" sashing to them. I ended up making 20 blocks, so this series is going to last all summer for sure! I didn't bother making a pattern for this quilt as it's so dang simple.

Another thing that is a little different is that I decided to work within a 2" grid. This seems big for most gridwork designs, but that was my intention to explore some density along with gridwork. I marked the 2" grids using a blue water-soluble marker and my basic 24"x 6" cutting ruler.

I based the first design on the classic cross-hatching grid with a matchstick filler. I have used this design a hundred times in various densities. But when I was doodling out my idea, I decided to add just one more layer of complexity. A frame within the empty square and another filled area.

I really like how this came out and gave the whole design a bit of an upscaled look. But it took a LONG time to complete. I had actually played with the idea of doing the whole grid with a frame, but I'm happy I didn't because it would have taken at least another 15 minutes to complete the block. Make sure to leave me a comment on the video and let me know what you think of this design and where you might use it. And FYI, it takes a ton of thread 🤣.
