Grid Quilting Block 3

This week, I am sharing one of my all-time favourite designs. If you've been around for a while, you will recognize this continuous curve design. I think this design may also be called the orange peel. In the video, I show a couple of different rulers that would have worked to stitch this design. I decided to go with a little 2" round ruler; I like the fat orange peel shape it gave me.

I do usually catch a little flak from folks saying I could do this so much faster freehand, and this is true. But I got used to using a ruler, working in the negative space of quilts. I just seem to like this look better; it isn't perfect, but I'm not a robot, and this is pretty close. I love combining this design with free-motion quilting, and I do that a lot in quilts. I've filled the middle with matchsticks, pebbles, and micro stipple. Anything you can quilt small enough to create the texture will give you a similar result.

I think this quilting design is a real winner and complements most quilts. There is a reason some of these designs are classics.
