Quilting Geometric Border
Nov 19, 2025Angie brought me this quilt, and we were on a bit of a tight crunch to get it done for the fall fair. It took me quite a while to really look at the quilt and decide where to add quilting. This pattern, Convex Illusions by Kwilt Art is very bold. Angie also chose some seriously vivid greens to contrast the black and white illusion center, so I wanted to make sure my quilting didn't overtake or fight with the illusion.

But I did have a very large black border that I could utilize. I decided to go with a semi-complex square geometric border.

This square border is one of those borders that looks more complex than it really is. Once you get all the math figured out, it goes reasonably quickly. This border is one that I cover in detail in my Modern Quilting with Rulers course. The only filler I’m going to use in this quilt is matchstick. The quilt is so striking that I’m going to focus on adding texture instead of too much design beyond the geometric border.

I used my little 2” round ruler to help me keep the continuous curve design as perfect as possible. I am also matching the thread to all of these green squares to keep the piecework as the main focus.

I didn’t want to impede the center of the quilt, which is really the focus of this composition, so I stitched every seam in the ditch and filled all of the black spaces with the same matchstick filler. This adds even more texture to the quilt without overwhelming it.

Angie did finish the quilt in time to get entered into the Fall Fair. And she did win best in show.
