Quiltworx Glacial Star

Today I want to share with you this gorgeous quilt made by Monette in Kamloops, BC.  This is the Glacial Star quilt pattern (discontinued) by Quiltworx.  I have quilted quite a few of these over the years, and I know that there are many more unquilted tops floating around out there.   So if you have been waiting for a sign, this is it!

Whenever I tackle one of these giant Quiltworx quilts, I always start with a full plan.  I might adjust the plan as I progress through the quilt, but I usually don't stray too far.  In my opinion this is key to creating a cohesive design and not allowing the chaos to overtake the quilt.  When I say chaos, I mean that usually these quilts are made with busy batik fabrics, wild colours, and complex piecing.  If I just went wild with my quilting and didn't have a plan for people to rest their eyes, I believe I could be doing a disservice to a quilt.

Here are some sketches that I doodled up and based my designs off of.

As you can see, I really wrestled with what to put in the flying geese, and when I finally got going on the quilt, I realized that I didn't need to quilt anything in them.  I had two layers of batting for this quilt, a layer of 80/20 and a layer of wool, so by quilting densely around the geese, I created this amazing texture that I just love.  Oh, and in case anyone wants to know, I used Glide 40wt thread in 4 different colours.

There are way too many decisions to go through in this blog post but if you are interested in know more about quilting Complex Paper Pieced Quilts I do have a two hour lecture about it that I give both in person and via zoom to groups/guilds/shops.

I honestly can't remember how long this took me to quilt, but I had to go through 8 hours of footage to put the video together, so my best guess is somewhere in the ballpark of 25 hours.

Thanks so much for reading and watching the video. I really do appreciate you taking the time.  If you find any value in my videos, please feel free to buy me a coffee 😃.

I do have a lot of things in the works for this summer (including a new summer series).  So watch your emails for some great announcements (like free stuff!).  I'll finish with some photos of the back of this quilt.
