Simple Quilting Designs for a Quiltworx Quilt
Apr 09, 2025
When Angie brought me this quilt, she told me that she wanted to put it on her bed. She wanted the density to not be too dense so the quilt would stay soft and comfortable. I loved this idea (as bed quilts are my favourite) but quickly realized I had never designed a Quiltworx Quilt to be a Bed Quilt. Mostly, people ask for a lot of quilting for a variety of reasons.

I got to work planning my design and quickly realized that this was going to be more challenging than I originally thought! It's funny how we get an idea in mind and stay within that box.
Here are some photos of my original concept, but as I progressed I realized I needed to edit more in order to not get too dense and blow the brief.
This is a great plan and would have looked amazing, but I think that, ultimately, it would have been too much quilting for Angie. If you look at my Quilter's Block Tool 2.0 you'll notice that density is the first thing on the list to consider when planning a quilt, and I truly believe that is where it belongs. After giving myself a kick in the butt I took these ideas and redesigned.
By the time I was done with this second design, I was ready to finally get stitching! I have a whole presentation about quilting these complex paper pieced quilts because I know how difficult it can be to work through. But if you take anything away from this video or blog post, I hope you realize that even though these quilts are large and complex, if you break them down into elements and take your time, it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Remember, you don't have to reinvent the wheel. Use designs you know and don't overdesign. 😆
The fanciest thing I did was probably this motif. When you watch the video you can see that it is simple elements, but any motif would have worked, even a simple petal shape.
I really love how this 'simple' plan came together to make a beautiful quilt with a bed quilt density.
Angie used my favourite backing material, Fireside! This material is my favourite because of how wonderful the quilting looks on the back and because it's so fuzzy and cozy.
Thank you, Angie, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this quilt!
